In a move that may disappoint looter-shooter fans on the go, Gearbox Software has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will not be launching on Nintendo Switch 2—at least not on day one.

The long-awaited sequel is set to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but Switch 2 owners will have to wait for a potential port. While Gearbox hasn’t ruled out a future release, the studio emphasized that the initial focus is on optimizing performance for current-gen hardware.
🎮 Why Skip Switch 2?
Despite the Nintendo Switch 2’s upgraded specs, Gearbox cited technical limitations and prioritization of core platforms as reasons for the delayed release on Nintendo’s next-gen console.
“We’re excited about the Switch 2 and what it offers, but for launch, we’re committed to delivering the best possible experience on our primary platforms,” a Gearbox spokesperson said during a closed Q&A session.
It’s worth noting that previous Borderlands titles—including Borderlands: Legendary Collection—did eventually make their way to the original Switch. However, those versions suffered from reduced visual fidelity and long load times, prompting Gearbox to take a more cautious approach this time around.
🚀 What to Expect at Launch
Borderlands 4 is set to expand the series’ trademark mayhem with:
New Vault Hunters, each with wildly different skill trees and combat styles
An expanded co-op campaign that supports full cross-play from day one
A deeper focus on narrative consequences, player choices, and rival factions
Refined gunplay, improved loot systems, and even vehicle customization
The game also boasts a new engine with upgraded lighting, physics-based interactions, and more dynamic open-world exploration across Pandora and beyond.
📅 Launch Timeline
Title: Borderlands 4
Release Date: March 2026 (TBA)
Platforms at Launch: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Switch 2 Version: No confirmed release window
With cross-play enabled and multiplayer front and center, Gearbox appears to be doubling down on the social chaos that made the series famous—while saving the Switch version for a later date, if at all.
✅ Final Word
While Borderlands 4 looks poised to deliver the franchise’s biggest and boldest entry yet, Nintendo fans will have to sit tight. With no Switch 2 version at launch, the looting and shooting will be limited to more powerful hardware—at least for now.
