Bring Her Back Review: Stay Gone

Bring Her Back, directed by the Philippou brothers, is a horror-thriller that wades into dark, supernatural territory with ambition and style, but ultimately struggles to leave a lasting mark. Known for their visceral approach in previous works, the Philippou brothers here attempt to blend intense emotion with otherworldly horror, but the result feels uneven.

What Works

✅ Visual Style

The cinematography is easily the film’s standout feature. From the washed-out, dreamlike color palette to the nightmarish underworld sequences, the visual design is both hypnotic and unsettling. The filmmakers lean into stark contrasts—shadowy, claustrophobic interiors giving way to sweeping, eerie landscapes that evoke a haunting sense of decay.

✅ Lead Performance

The lead actor carries the film with an impressive intensity. His portrayal of a grieving husband torn between love and obsession grounds the film, lending it a raw, human edge that’s often missing in the script itself.

✅ Atmosphere

Atmosphere is where Bring Her Back shines. The brothers’ flair for creating an immersive, almost tactile sense of dread is present throughout, pulling the viewer in even when the story loses momentum.

Where It Stumbles

ree

❌ Script and Pacing

The script never quite matches the visual ambition. The plot—centered around a man’s desperate attempt to bring his wife back from the dead—feels overly familiar and doesn’t offer many surprises. While the first act sets up a solid emotional core, the middle section meanders, bogged down by repetitive dialogue and a lack of narrative propulsion.

❌ Character Development

Supporting characters feel thin and undercooked. The protagonist’s motivations are clear, but those around him remain sketches rather than fully realized people, which drains some of the tension from key interactions and leaves dramatic beats feeling hollow.

❌ Themes Left Hanging

Bring Her Back flirts with weighty themes—grief, obsession, the cost of playing god—but never digs deep enough to make them resonate. Instead, it leans heavily on unsettling imagery without giving it the thematic backbone it needs to stick.

⚖️

Verdict

ree

At 6/10, Bring Her Back is an intriguing but ultimately frustrating watch. The Philippou brothers’ eye for striking visuals and the lead’s committed performance can’t fully overcome the thinly written characters and the predictable narrative arc. Fans of atmospheric horror will find plenty to appreciate, but it’s hard not to feel like Bring Her Back doesn’t live up to the promise of its premise.

It’s a film that impresses in the moment, but like a half-remembered dream, quickly fades once the credits roll.
