The game has received a score of at least 9/10 across most publications, with a score of 92 on Metacritic and OpenCritic at the time of writing. This is a commendable achievement considering Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is Sandfall Interactive’s debut game.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not the first debut game to launch to critical acclaim in 2025. Blue Prince, a mystery strategy and puzzle title by Dogubomb, is also the developer’s first game and has managed to score 92 on Metacritic. However, it has a user score of 7.7.
