Ghost of Yotei State of Play Gameplay Deep Dive

Dive into the Past

Ghost of Yotei developers first highlighted a brand-new system in the game, which allows players to delve into Atsu’s past with the press of a button. The new system will allow players to get a deeper insight into the pain the character has felt and what motivations she has to avenge her family.

New Exploration System

The game also features a new exploration system that caters to different playstyles. A new underlying clue system has been introduced, which will open new adventures and areas of the game. The world is also filled with Altars of Reflection, which players need to find to unlock new abilities for Atsu.

The developers explained that the Ghost of Yotei is not about rushing; instead, the best way to play it is to use your ‘Spy Glass’ to spot an interesting location and then go and explore it. The world is vast; however, it’s not about exploring it all, but rather engaging with content that excites players the most.

Moreover, Atsu can also set up camp under the stars to rest, play her shamisen or cook for themselves. However, she is not alone and can be greeted by different types of important characters and upgrades while resting. The journal from the Ghost of Tsushima has been replaced with a new menu that allows players to manage mentors, allies and vendors more easily.

Ghost of Yotei Combat

Coming to what players have been looking forward to the most from Ghost of Yotei’s State of Play gameplay deep dive, the combat. Players will be able to wield various weapons, including Katanas, Saregamas, Odachis, Spears, and dual swords. Each of these weapons has unique effects against enemies, and they all come with their own set of upgrades.

We also got to see a segment where Atsu took down an enemy camp while hunting for Lord Saito. Atsu is neither a samurai nor a ninja; she is a lone wolf, which means she will use every dirty trick in the book to succeed. We see the character swap between all types of weapons while fighting this camp, tossing spears, wielding dual katanas and even using stealth with the Saregama. Players will also see a new system where they can be disarmed by enemies when hit. Similarly, you can also disarm them if you are fast enough.

That’s not all, Atsu has a variety of ranged weapons in Ghost of Yotei, including different types of bows, guns, kunais, powders and more. Players will also have to adapt to the enemy’s playstyle during combat; for example, dual swords are the best counters for spears, and Odachis can be very effective against larger enemies.

Ghost of Yotei Customisation

Ghost of Yotei’s world is filled with different types of armour and gear, and players can use these items to customise their playstyles. You can either go for stealth, range or melee, while customising the look and feel of your weapons to bring your personality to the game.

Different Modes

Ghost of Yotei’s State of Play gameplay deep dive has confirmed that photo mode will be available at release. Apart from that, players can also choose their experience, which ranges from Standard, Subtitled, Samurai Cinema and Kurosawa modes. Samurai Cinema comes with a Japanese soundtrack with full lip sync and English subtitles.

There are two additional game modes: Miike mode, which features a closer camera during combat, along with enhanced blood and mud effects. The other is the Watanabe mode, in which players listen to lo-fi beats while exploring and engaging in battle.

In other news, a sneaky gamer recently spied on Sucker Punch HQ to see Ghost of Yotei being developed. What are your thoughts on Ghost of Yotei’s gameplay deep dive at today’s State of Play event?
