Nintendo has announced an indefinite delay in U.S. preorders for its upcoming Switch 2 console due to newly imposed tariffs by President Donald Trump. Originally scheduled to commence on April 9, the preorder process has been postponed as the company assesses the financial implications of these tariffs and the evolving market landscape. Despite this setback, Nintendo maintains that the Switch 2’s official launch date remains set for June 5, 2025.
The newly introduced tariffs have significant ramifications for Nintendo’s manufacturing operations, particularly affecting production facilities in China and Vietnam. These tariffs are anticipated to increase production costs, which may influence the console’s final retail price. The Switch 2 is slated to launch at a base price of $449.99, with a special edition bundle featuring Mario Kart World priced at $499.99.
In response to these developments, Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated that the company is evaluating the impact of the U.S. government’s tariffs on the Switch 2. He highlighted that Nintendo’s manufacturing is not confined to China but also extends to other Asian countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia. Furukawa emphasized that while some impact is anticipated, the influence on this year’s financial results is expected to be minimal.
The broader economic context is marked by significant market volatility following the announcement of these tariffs. Major U.S. stock indices have experienced substantial declines, and various industries, including technology and agriculture, are bracing for the repercussions of escalating trade tensions.
Nintendo has assured customers that it will provide updates on the revised preorder timeline as soon as possible. The company remains committed to delivering the Switch 2 to the U.S. market on the planned release date, despite the current uncertainties.
