🧙 The Elder Scrolls Online Developers Address Crossplay Status

After years of player speculation, ZeniMax Online Studios has finally broken their silence on a long-standing community request: crossplay support for The Elder Scrolls Online. In a recent developer livestream and follow-up Q&A, the team addressed whether the popular MMORPG will ever allow players across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation to adventure together.

🛑 The Short Answer: Not Anytime Soon

According to ZeniMax, while crossplay has been discussed internally, the feature is not currently in development. Creative Director Rich Lambert explained the challenges clearly:

“ESO wasn’t built with crossplay in mind. Server infrastructure, platform ecosystems, and account management were all designed over a decade ago with strict separation. We’re not saying never—but it’s not on the near-future roadmap.”

This confirmation puts to rest years of speculation, especially after Fallout 76 introduced limited cross-progression features and with other MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and Destiny 2 embracing full or partial crossplay.

💬 Why Fans Want It

Crossplay has long been a wish-list item for ESO players. With the game’s massive world, new content drops like Gold Road, and its community-focused gameplay (dungeons, PvP, guilds), the ability to play with friends across platforms would breathe new life into the player base.

Reddit threads and social media have been buzzing in recent years with calls for unifying servers, particularly for events like Midyear Mayhem and the Undaunted Celebration.

🌍 Cross-Progression Still a Possibility?

While crossplay is off the table for now, Lambert teased that cross-progression is being “actively explored.” This would allow players to retain character progress, purchases, and inventory between platforms—something especially relevant with ESO’s availability on Game Pass and PS Plus.

🔮 What’s Next for ESO?

Despite no crossplay, The Elder Scrolls Online continues to grow. The Gold Road chapter launches this June, introducing a brand-new zone, Scribing (a new customizable spell system), and the long-awaited return of Ithelia, the forgotten Daedric Prince.

🧠 Final Thoughts

While it’s disappointing to hear that crossplay isn’t in the cards just yet, the developers’ transparency offers clarity. For now, ESO players will need to continue their adventures within their chosen platform—though the dream of slaying Daedra with friends across the digital divide isn’t dead, just delayed.
