Doom: The Dark Ages Reveals Cosmic Realm Gameplay

PlayStation and id Software have arrived with a brand new gameplay trailer for Doom: The Dark Ages, featuring the Cosmic Realm, captured on the PS5 Pro.

“An Unholy Union Between Hell and the Cosmic Realm”

With Doom: The Dark Ages, the developers aimed to incorporate a world they had never visited into the Doom universe, and the Cosmic Realm is something they have long wanted to explore. The world has been described as a ‘Lovecraftian dimension’ with ‘cyclopean architecture’ filled with dark secrets and ‘the most insane enemies’. Check out the new gameplay trailer below.

Doom: The Dark Ages Cosmic Realm Enemies

Cosmic Baron

Starting with the enemies you find in Doom: The Dark Ages’ Cosmic Realm, first up is the Cosmic Baron. Described as a “twin-bladed brute” who also has ranged psionic attacks that block projectiles and also damage you. The way to take them down is by exploiting the parry windows. The developers added that all enemies in Doom: The Dark Ages will require players to be aggressive, weaving through a maze of projectiles before engaging the enemy.

Next up is Cacodemon, a “hybrid between two dimensions” and a new design for the upcoming game. The enemy has been described as “a floating mass of telepathic terror”, which can immobilise you with shield attacks and also use tentacle strikes to harm the players.

To take down all the new and deadly enemies from Doom: The Dark Ages’ Cosmic Realm, players will need to take advantage of the new weapon made specially for this world, “Reaver Chainshot”. The weapon is “a brutal ballistic iron mace of death”, which can be used quickly for a light attack on a single enemy, or players can hold down the trigger to unleash the ‘Chaos Sphere’, which inflicts long-range melee strikes and turns enemies into “demonic pulp”.

Other Doom: The Dark Ages Improvements

Thanks to the latest version of idTech, developers have been able to bring even the most content-rich content to the screen, including “bigger spaces with longer views, more enemies to fight, more destruction, better feedback, and a better overall gaming experience.” The game features fully dynamic lighting powered by ray tracing and runs “buttery-smooth at 60 fps on PlayStation” thanks to the idTech 8 engine.
